“If” 對我來說，是一首非常重要的詩。它伴隨我成長，一直到今天，我依然能在生活的各個層面感受到這首詩對我的深遠影響。
今天，我將透過背誦這首詩，將其中的情感傳遞給正在閱讀的你。我也希望借助取自《讀者文摘》的中文翻譯，讓更多人能夠理解並欣賞這首由諾貝爾詩人吉卜林所寫的我最愛的詩作《假如》。
I’m going to recite for you a poem that means the world to me. I grew up with this poem, and to this day, I still live by its principles. The poem is called “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing (*left) in you
Except for the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

The version I used to read every day had the word “left” added to this line. When I recited this poem from memory, I just couldn’t fight my old habit!
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—*you’ll be a Man, my son!

因為我不是男孩，所以當我唸這首詩給自己時，我喜歡將結尾改變。
When I read this poem to myself, since I’m not a boy, I prefer to change the ending to:
And—which is more—you’ll be a grown-up, my child!
如果你和我一樣，希望能將這首詩作為生活的指引，但有時會因為其中的性別字眼而感到距離感（畢竟這首詩是吉卜林寫給他兒子的），那也許你可以嘗試這樣做。我提供了一個小小的改動，雖然破壞了原本的押韻，但為了讓自己更融入詩歌的意境，這樣的小代價還是值得的。
So, if like me, you’d like to live by this poem, but somehow feel a bit alienated by the gender-specific language (since it was originally written for Kipling’s son), maybe this alternative ending will resonate with you. It might mess with the poem’s rhyme, but it’s a small price to pay to feel more included in the message.

假如你能等待，而不怕等得累，
或受謗時不屑以牙還牙，
或被恨時不怨天尤人，
然而別看來太好，話也別講得太聰明；
假如你能作夢──而不成為夢的的奴隸；
假如你能思考──而不只以思考為目的，
假如你能面對勝利和慘敗，而把這兩個騙子一視同仁；
假如你聽到你講的真話給壞蛋歪曲了去陷害蠢人，卻仍能泰然自持，
或者你看到你曾拼命維護的珍貴東西破碎了，而仍能彎下腰用陳舊的工具去修理
