I’m Tammy, I think it’s wonderful you’ve found this site, and I highly recommend working with Abby. Why? Let me tell you a story about two weeks of my life that started from a disaster and a semi-nervous breakdown but ended up… well, you figure it out.
I am a current high school senior, and in June of 2018 (when junior year came to an end), I challenged myself to apply for 21 colleges. The process included writing a 650-word Common Application Essay (for most schools), and multiple supplemental essays for each college by January of the next year. By December, I realized I was taking too long on my Common App Essay (because I had two versions that I kept revising, and I couldn’t decide which one to use). Consequently, I had to speed-write other essays. So much for quality.
So I naturally thought: I need help.
What better help than from an English-teaching YouTuber/ UPenn graduate (I’m clapping my hands in front of the screen)/ experienced essay editor?
I visited Abby’s website, left a note and a sample of my common app essay, and soon after, we began working together.
Abby is the most organized person I know. She categorized my work into Not-yet Written, Work in Progress, Ready to Review, and Done files, and kept notes on all the deadlines and essay prompts.
Every comment I left for Abby was literally answered within a few hours. Looking at each piece, I would see several suggestions from Abby, but never feel pressured. They would include grammar checks, highlights for elaboration, marks that suggested further discussion during our video calls, and ideas for other content.
For each one of our video calls, Abby prepared a list of what to discuss and was always open to other questions that I had. What she checked was not just my word choice and grammar, but also whether an essay could be re-used, and how certain parts could become more emotional or be rephrased to present me better. For college applications, many schools would wish for applicants to show themselves in a really meaningful way. Since I had more than 50 essays to work on, Abby helped me out a lot with what part of me could best be presented in which essay and for which college.
What I think was really great was also that Abby didn’t write my essays for me, but pointed me in the direction of how I could be a better writer in a detailed and encouraging way through discussion. In the process, each essay was revised about three or four times, and I could really see the rough draft evolving into a more polished version with better diction, a more meaningful one with emphasis and elaboration, and finally, a masterpiece with attractive details that shine through.
Within one week, we chose and polished (nearly rewriting half of) my Common App Essay, and revised multiple essays for thirteen schools. Within a few more days, all the others were done. When I first spoke to Abby, all I had in my mind was to get everything done before the deadline. I ended up having every essay looked over, changed, polished many times, and even learned to express myself better.
If you’re looking for a patient, organized, intelligent, and encouraging partner, you know where to find one!
Good luck with your projects!
